Mercy Earns Fourth Straight Medicare 5-Star Rating

March 4, 2019

(DURANGO, COLO.) In its Feb. 28 hospital quality ratings data release, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) once again recognized Mercy Regional Medical Center with a five-star rating for overall hospital quality.  Mercy has received a five-star rating in each of Medicare’s three previous data releases, the first of which was in July of 2016.

Mercy, which is part of the Centura Health system, is one of only six hospitals in Colorado and the only hospital in the Four Corners to receive a five-star rating for overall hospital quality in the most recent release.  Nationally, only 293 hospitals—slightly less than eight percent of 3,725 rated by CMS—received a five-star rating.  The most common overall hospital quality rating is three stars.  In the first two releases, Mercy was the only Colorado hospital to receive a five-star rating, and it was one of seven hospitals in the third release.

“Receiving another five-star rating for quality is testament to the efforts of our incredible people who are on a mission to provide exceptional, whole-person care,” said Mercy Regional Medical Center CEO Will McConnell.  “This recognition requires an unwavering focus, by all staff and providers, on every aspect of patient care.”

The overall hospital quality star ratings are based on a variety of measures from seven categories, including mortality, safety of care, readmissions, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, and efficient use of medical imaging.

Fifty-eight hospitals in Colorado were rated by CMS in the most recent data release.  Nearly 850 U.S. hospitals did not receive ratings because they did not meet the minimum reporting thresholds.
